Knowing the “Them”

The ramifications of conflict first truly resonated with me in the winter of 2008-2009. I was sitting in a small café in a suburb of Tel Aviv, studying for the exams that would wrap up my six-month-long program in Israel. My friend suddenly turned her computer towards me, brushing aside scattered note cards and study guides, to display the breaking headlines of violence in the Gaza Strip.

That’s no surprise, since there is a wide range of deeply held viewpoints and emotions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within the Jewish community.

Israel Need Not Be Third Rail

Yesterday, the New York Times printed an article entitled "On Israel, Jews and Leaders Often Disagree," which began with the following characterization: "Criticizing Israel has long been the equivalent of touching the third rail in many Jewish families and friendships, relegating disagreements to a conversational demilitarized zone where only the innocent and foolhardy go." This hit home with me for a number of personal and professional reasons.

With God on Our Side: Hallowed Narratives as Swiss Cheese

I was recently invited to serve on a panel at Harvard Divinity School after the screening of a new film, With God on Our Side. The film follows a young man who was brought up in a Christian Zionist home, Christopher Harrell, as he travels around Israel and the Palestinian territories. Christopher sees much of what he envisioned as a child about the proverbial land of milk and honey.
